The captcha on your site might be pulling you out of Google

You know that "Are you a robot?" screen some sites show to suspicious visitors? It might be knocking your pages out of Google, and the worst part is you probably will not notice on your own 😫

When your site's security system treats Googlebot as suspicious, which happens more often than you would think, it serves the verification screen first instead of your real content. Google then indexes that screen, not your page.

And it gets a bit worse: the same captcha screen shows up on thousands of different sites. When Google sees several identical pages, it picks one as the main version (canonical) and marks the rest as duplicates. So Google can pick another site's page as the original and flag yours as the copy. The result: your page disappears from search.

• Open Search Console and go to the indexing report. If pages are marked as duplicates or canonicalised elsewhere, this could be the problem.
• Use the URL Inspection tool and check which address Google picked as the main version. If it belongs to another site, something is probably wrong.
• Talk to your security provider, CDN or host to find out whether the system is blocking Googlebot.

If you use Cloudflare, the path is simpler and takes less than a minute 🙂

• Open the Cloudflare dashboard and click your domain.
• In the side menu, go to Security and then Settings.
• Look for "Bot Fight Mode" and switch the toggle off.

That mode is what may be treating Googlebot as suspicious and showing it the verification screen. Turn it off and Google goes back to receiving your content normally.

Once fixed, remember to request a new crawl in Search Console with the Validate Fix tool. If you run a site with heavier security, it pays to review Search Console periodically to make sure Googlebot is getting the right pages.
